Summary

When Jack left Eleanor West's School for Wayward Children, she was carrying the body of her deliciously deranged sister - whom she had recently murdered in a fit of righteous justice - back to their home on the Moors。

But death in their adopted world isn't always as permanent as it is here, and when Jack is herself carried back into the school, it becomes clear that something has happened to her。 Something terrible。 Something of which only the maddest of scientists could conceive。 Something only her friends are equipped to help her overcome。

Eleanor West's "No Quests" rule is about to be broken。

I wasn't the biggest fan of the Jack & Jill storyline which was told in the second instalment but this one was fun。 Somewhat similar to the previous one, some of the teens visit different world in order to fulfil their quest and help their friend。 As per usual, the characters are pretty diverse and all have their unique ways due to their time in other worlds。 Yes, sometimes Sumi can be somewhat annoying and Jack's cold attitude also feels a bit too much at times but overall I still enjoyed this I wasn't the biggest fan of the Jack & Jill storyline which was told in the second instalment but this one was fun。 Somewhat similar to the previous one, some of the teens visit different world in order to fulfil their quest and help their friend。 As per usual, the characters are pretty diverse and all have their unique ways due to their time in other worlds。 Yes, sometimes Sumi can be somewhat annoying and Jack's cold attitude also feels a bit too much at times but overall I still enjoyed this one very much, because it is not only the individual characters but rather their dynamic that makes this series so good。 。。。more

3。5⭐I really missed Jack and the Moors and I really love these characters。 But, because these books are so short, everything felt rushed, like it happened in a second and I wasn’t allowed to process everything。

The end at last to Jack and Jill's story and their fight for power in the Moors。Unfortunately, I didn't quite enjoy this。 While there were some loose ends and questions left when Jack took her sister's body home to revive her and curse her to a life of mortality, unable to be a vampire, a lot of this story felt redundant。 The writing as well did not have the same appeal。 It also felt like a cram-fest of moral and social issues shoved down my throat, with zero subtlety。 I struggled to read this, The end at last to Jack and Jill's story and their fight for power in the Moors。Unfortunately, I didn't quite enjoy this。 While there were some loose ends and questions left when Jack took her sister's body home to revive her and curse her to a life of mortality, unable to be a vampire, a lot of this story felt redundant。 The writing as well did not have the same appeal。 It also felt like a cram-fest of moral and social issues shoved down my throat, with zero subtlety。 I struggled to read this, only powering through because of how short it was。2½ 🌟 。。。more

I’m unfortunately rapidly losing interest in this series。

These are all about the characters -- the plots are sparse but we go deep on these intense kids who are trapped on the wrong side of perfection; except in this case Jack has come back because she needs help。The books are cumulative so even though the focus is on Jack, we see more of what makes Cora, Kade, Sumi and Christopher tick。

Not my favorite in the series (I found this one to be a bit heavy handed) but still an enjoyable read。

I loved this because it was more Jack/Jill/the Moors story, which is dark and gruesome and horrifying and delicious。 I liked that it finally gave their story more of an ending, because unlike other Wayward Children, their return to their world doesn't mean a "happy ending" for anyone involved。 I liked that Cora, Christopher, Kade, and Sumi got to do more adventures and questing, which was fun in Beneath the Sugar Sky。 I didn't like the expansion of the Moors to include Drowned Gods, because they I loved this because it was more Jack/Jill/the Moors story, which is dark and gruesome and horrifying and delicious。 I liked that it finally gave their story more of an ending, because unlike other Wayward Children, their return to their world doesn't mean a "happy ending" for anyone involved。 I liked that Cora, Christopher, Kade, and Sumi got to do more adventures and questing, which was fun in Beneath the Sugar Sky。 I didn't like the expansion of the Moors to include Drowned Gods, because they seemed to overlap with Nadya's world as a Drowned Girl, at least in concept。 I think there could have been different ways of introducing more worldbuilding, danger, and potential allies without it。 Maybe it's because I read this book so quickly, but I had a "oh, we've done drowned things before" reaction。 Not a major negative, and I still loved this book。 This series still continues to be readable for teens or even older children, if they wanted to, despite being novellas for adults。 。。。more

Some of the books in this series hit better than others。 This is definitely one of the better ones。

Túto knihu vnímam ako ukončenie väčšej príbehovej línie。 Vo viacerých smeroch, ale predovšetkým ide o uzatvorenie Jackinho a Jillinho príbehu。 Táto pomyselná posledná kapitola v ich životoch bola ešte temnejšia ako ich začiatky。 Doslova som si to vychutnávala, rovnako aj úžasné dialógy。 Touto knihou mi skrátka autorka pripomenula, prečo som sa do série zamilovala。 Som zvedavá, ako to všetko bude pokračovať。

A fun addition to the second novel, in which the Wayward Children gang go on to save the Moors。 It's definitely much less introspective and deeply poignant the way the other standalones are, but then again not everything in life needs to be extraordinarily meaningful。 Overall, a plot-driven and fun read that helps normalize LGBTQ+ relationships and more clearly details what living with OCD is like。 A fun addition to the second novel, in which the Wayward Children gang go on to save the Moors。 It's definitely much less introspective and deeply poignant the way the other standalones are, but then again not everything in life needs to be extraordinarily meaningful。 Overall, a plot-driven and fun read that helps normalize LGBTQ+ relationships and more clearly details what living with OCD is like。 。。。more

I think because these books are so short and I leave such a huge length of time between reading each one, I keep forgetting what happens in the previous ones and I spent most of my time trying my hardest to recall。 However, Jack is my favourite character in this series and I think Down Among the Sticks and Bones was my favourite book, so I was delighted to get back into this particular world。 Wish we could have spent more time in it。 My only issue with these books is they aren't long enough。 I w I think because these books are so short and I leave such a huge length of time between reading each one, I keep forgetting what happens in the previous ones and I spent most of my time trying my hardest to recall。 However, Jack is my favourite character in this series and I think Down Among the Sticks and Bones was my favourite book, so I was delighted to get back into this particular world。 Wish we could have spent more time in it。 My only issue with these books is they aren't long enough。 I would have loved this to be a fully fleshed out novel and we got to see more of the characters' reactions to The Moors (which I adore。 I kinda wanna live here myself)。Also, I'm being very greedy but I would love another book focusing on Jack and Alexis。 I mean, that epilogue leaves the door open, doesn't it? 。。。more

So here is the thing。。。 After the events of book two, I was so ready to find out what in the world happened in the aftermath。 I was just a tad disappointed。 This just felt kind of unnecessary。 I realized that I didn't need another Jack & Jill story。 I was okay with how their story previously ended。 It didn't have the same magic that usually makes me a part of the books, idk this one didn't suck me in as the previous ones did。Maybe I'm at the start of a reading slump, who knows。。。。 I'll have to c So here is the thing。。。 After the events of book two, I was so ready to find out what in the world happened in the aftermath。 I was just a tad disappointed。 This just felt kind of unnecessary。 I realized that I didn't need another Jack & Jill story。 I was okay with how their story previously ended。 It didn't have the same magic that usually makes me a part of the books, idk this one didn't suck me in as the previous ones did。Maybe I'm at the start of a reading slump, who knows。。。。 I'll have to come back to this series and try again。 。。。more

The adventure continues with Jack & Jill, as they fight for dominion in the Moors, in a world that creates its monsters and demands it’s balance。

This book is an easy, quick read, but that doesn't mean it's an easy, quick book。 We return to the Moors, the world where their magic doorway led the Wolcott twins Jack and Jill。 But this time, Jill has forced a body switch。 Jack is determined to get her own body back to restore balance to her world。The characters are a mishmash of The Wizard of Oz and Frankenstein, and other students from Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children join Jack on her quest。 Cora, Sumi, Kade, and Christopher have all This book is an easy, quick read, but that doesn't mean it's an easy, quick book。 We return to the Moors, the world where their magic doorway led the Wolcott twins Jack and Jill。 But this time, Jill has forced a body switch。 Jack is determined to get her own body back to restore balance to her world。The characters are a mishmash of The Wizard of Oz and Frankenstein, and other students from Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children join Jack on her quest。 Cora, Sumi, Kade, and Christopher have all gone through doorways of their own, an experience that changed them and left them longing for what they can't find in our world。 This time, they all go through Jack's doorway, and they each use their unique talents to try to help her。As always, McGuire's characters are unique, and her world-building is stellar。For anyone who hasn't read this series, I recommend starting at the beginning, but at least read Down Among the Sticks and Bones before reading this book。 。。。more

I feel like I've gotten to know these characters and have an investment in each of their stories。 This book also has the save-the-world type of epic/high-stakes scope I find really satisfying in a story。 I think this novella also makes some interesting commentary on what is a monster and what makes a monster, and conversely what is a hero and what makes someone a hero。 I just thought this was such a great and satisfying continuation of the story! 。。。more

This installment of the Wayward Children series is back in the Moors, but mostly about the characters going there and secondly about the general setting--the major characters (the Master and Dr。 Bleak) are pretty much missing。 But there's lots of action around Jack and Jill switching bodies, and Jack trying to set that right。 Definitely an engaging read。But like some others, I'm missing the aspects of searching for a Door that some of the other books have。 These characters are longing for their This installment of the Wayward Children series is back in the Moors, but mostly about the characters going there and secondly about the general setting--the major characters (the Master and Dr。 Bleak) are pretty much missing。 But there's lots of action around Jack and Jill switching bodies, and Jack trying to set that right。 Definitely an engaging read。But like some others, I'm missing the aspects of searching for a Door that some of the other books have。 These characters are longing for their doors, but it's an all-star show and they've all been through and been heroes in those worlds, saving them。The setting is both endlessly generative (alternate worlds that seem to have some relationship, and structure for how they are classified) and maybe a bit limiting。 The worlds may seem very structured or highly arbitrary, but they are all simplified versions of the reality we live in, which is not expressly privileged in the books but sort of comes out that way by reflection in the alternates。 So we could call where we are Reality in this series。The well-spoken bickering is really pronounced in this one。 There's a lot of one-uppy "you don't understand because you don't know arbitrary rule x from my special universe"。 There are often larger points at play, but platitudes seem pretty close to hand in these instances。 I don't know, it's just perhaps a little tiring。 Maybe time to bring this series to its exciting conclusion? 。。。more

It's impossible to explain how special these books are。 Maybe objectively they do deserve those five star ratings, maybe I should just start giving them。 I can't stop talking about these books, I want everyone who knows me to read these books and I want McGuire to write an endless supply of these books, so I will always have new worlds to discover and new characters to be friends with。 It's impossible to wait a week to read the next book。 So, I picked it up now。Although I love exploring new worl It's impossible to explain how special these books are。 Maybe objectively they do deserve those five star ratings, maybe I should just start giving them。 I can't stop talking about these books, I want everyone who knows me to read these books and I want McGuire to write an endless supply of these books, so I will always have new worlds to discover and new characters to be friends with。 It's impossible to wait a week to read the next book。 So, I picked it up now。Although I love exploring new worlds, I always start smiling when I realize that we're gonna catch up with the entire group again for an adventure and quest in one of their worlds。 In this case the smile only brightened when I discovered that we were gonna return to the world of Jack and Jill, of Vampires and Mad scientists。 It might be the most interesting fictional(?) world I have ever read about and I hope that somehow McGuire will find a way to set another book there。I really enjoyed watching the characters who don't feel at home in this world trying to make sense of it。 Even Christopher, who at least longs for a world much like this one, seems a little out of place。 Watching those characters in each other's worlds is a great way of showing us how all those worlds only open their doors to people who truly belong there and it's showing how unique and tight that fit is。 People don't belong in a world much like something。 They only belong in their world。On top of that I really enjoyed the plot。 I think this story was coming for quite some time。 We know that death is quite meaningless in this world, which also leads to endless circles of the same pain and hurt repeating and happening again。 This story is the story of one girl who needs to break one of those circles in the most heartbreaking way possible。 This story is the story of her friends still loving her, monster or not。 。。。more
